Twisting Alone

Assef is a religious leader. The image shows Assef among others in society as represented through sticks. Assef’s stick is like a broken twisted stick that stands out and does not fit in with other sticks since Assef twists religion and turns it into something violent when it is not like the stick is broken and twisted. Usually in muslim tradition the prayer rug is on the floor; however for Assef, the rug is on his wall, showing how he is a religious leader and does not follow religious traditions. Since Assef is part of the Taliban, he twists religion out of context, turning it into something violent when that is not what it means. Other sticks are grouped together and bond with each other; Assef’s stick lies alone and its ends stick out towards, showing violence and unfriendliness.

  1. I think that it is interesting how you created an image with sticks. The bent out stick could also represent how the world is moving on, but Amir is damaged and traumatized from his inaction.

  2. I think that this metaphor describing how Assef twists people and follows his own way of doing as well as his unfriendliness by being alone.

  3. I really like how you symbolized the broken, twisted stick with Assef's behavior and how he stands out as the "evil" one out of a group of people. I think the image could also show people who are good and repent their actions are the lighter colored sticks, and people like Assef are darker.

  4. I like your metaphor! It's really creative, and I like how Assef is represented by a dark, twisted stick which emphasizes his character, and the way he twists religion into something its not.

  5. This metaphor is really creative, and I think it embodies Assef and his morals/way of life really well. The connections you made like being a part of the Taliban really shows how "twisted" Assef really is.
