Rahim Khan's Offer

This locker represents the situation of Rahim Khan offering Amir a chance to go back to Afghanistan to get Sohrab. In this situation, the interior of the locker represents Afghanistan and the unatoned sins of Amir. In order to avoid his feelings and the guilt that he felt, Amir shut the locker and closed the door on Hassan and Afghanistan. By Rahim giving him a chance to go back to help Sohrab, he is offering him a sliver of a chance to go back to be good again. The partially opened locker represents the opportunity that Rahim Khan has given to Amir. However, until this point, that locker has been closed for Amir. He locked it when he left to America and abandoned all of his problems that existed back in Afghanistan. The lock represents the trip to America that Amir took, and how it gave him an opportunity to avoid his problems rather than confront him. However, Amir’s accepting of the opportunity has unlocked the lock, allowing him to travel back to Afghanistan and try to make amends for his past actions.

  1. I like how you included the lock as a representation of Amir's "way to be good again." It really shows how Rahim Khan has inspired him to find Sohrab and change his perspective on adopting him. It's really great to see that you included that Amir is working on himself, and is trying to be good again.

  2. This is a really good metaphor! I like how the opened locker reflects Amir's own willingness to return to Afghanistan, and his step towards accepting his past and redeeming himself. The image could also symbolize secrets and lies that Amir has kept to himself for a long time, before finally revealing them to others (like Soraya).

  3. I really like how you used one object in more than one way by opening it slightly and including a lock. I think it shows the dimensions of Amir's guilt & the problems he has to face.

  4. I thought this was a really great way to show Amir getting a second chance. Amir has locked up his past and feels guilty thinking about Hassan and everything else. Rahim Khan acts as a door to Amir, giving Amir a second chance to redeem himself by returning to Afghanistan. Amir accepting responsibility leads to him opening the door and facing his unatoned sins.

  5. I really like how the lock is not actually around the latch thingy anymore because it shows that because of Rahim Khan, there is an opportunity for Amir to make a change and this photo presents the idea of Amir's cowardice in a very interesting light.

  6. Love how you turned an ordinary object like a locker into such a deep metaphor of Amir, his life, and his conflicting desires. Your explanation was clear and nuanced--really made for great analysis. Great job!

  7. I like how you used my locker without me knowing in this picture. Another connections I see is the locker next to it, which could represent Hassan, as he had lived his life fulfilled, and could lock away his life full.

  8. I liked the locker metaphor relating to redemption for Amir. Similarly, after Amir tries to put Sohrab into an orphanage temporarily, Sohrab's trust of Amir can also be represented by a partially opened locker.
